Sushi!
Justin and I made sushi for the first time last night. It turned out really well, and was so fun to make. It's sad that it took us so long to try it out! We will have to see how many of our friends eat sushi and maybe have everyone make their own rolls at the next get together.

My first one, ready to roll. Shrimp, carrot, green onion, celery.

Justin's first roll ~ shrimp, carrot, green onion, avacado.
He had a lot of trouble with adding too much rich and getting huge rolls.

Mine turned out pretty small, but I still don't like cramming that much food in my mouth at once & still ate them in two bites. Next time I want to work on making bite-size rolls, so I don't end up with half of the fillings per bite.

I got creative with my other roll & split it in half to try two new combinations. My first roll is on the right half (there is another layer of rolls under all of this). Top left we have my "veggies & dip roll", which is my favorite vegetable dip with celery and carrots. It wasn't bad, but you couldn't taste the dip much at all. I'd like to try a stronger sauce, like barbeque, next time. Bottom left is shrimp and pepperoni, which ended up being my favorite.

We bought some miso soup cups (since I've never found miso on its own) and had a fancy little meal.

Unfortunently I don't like eating sushi as much as I like making it. (It's good, but not one of my favorite foods) I do really like the idea of creating odd combinations though, like a Mexican themed roll with spanish rice, avacado, tomato, onion, etc. I'm not sure if the nori would work with the flavors, but if they can create inside-out rolls, I think I would be able to create a roll without using the nori.

beautiful. :)

Mexican themed rolls sounds like a great idea.
I prefer that type of food over sushi too.
I love the vitamin boost sushi gives you but am paranoid about food parasites.
I've only eaten sushi once because of my own stupid fears.

Thanks!

I understand the parasite fears ~ ever since I took the class "The Great Neglected Diseases" in college, haha. We also learned about how well trained the sushi chefs are to spot the parasites in fish, so I don't get worried about that (unless it was some cheap, shady looking place).

Chinese food is actually my favorite type of food, maybe I'll have to come up with a fried-rice type of roll. I only like a few simple Mexican foods.

Your starry night cross-stitch is lovely! I had always learned to work one color at a time, not by grids like you are doing. Your way seems like it would be much easier for counting. I've never had the patience to finish a cross-stich myself!

This surprises me since you do elaborate sewing projects all the time. ;)

Yes, but I can usually finish a dress in three days.
More importantly, I'm not making it for myself. The wall-hanging I made for our house, which only took a few hours longer than a normal dress, (or as long as some of the most complex ones)... that took me 3 months to finish it up, and I only got it finished because of my husband's 'reminders'. I'm really bad at large projects.

Wow! I've never seen pepperoni in a sushi roll before. I suppose you could roll up just about anything the right size. There are some odd/interesting local rolls here. One has creamed cheese.

I don't eat fish but I do love vegetarian sushi with carrots, cucumber, avocado, pickled cabbage, plum, mushrooms, and asparagus though not all in the same roll.

I'm surprised the health food stores nearby don't carry miso or are they not local enough to pick up occasional items?

I love the presentation. Shame you don't live closer because I enjoy eating sushi more than making it. Okay, I never actually tried but I can vouch for the enjoyment in the eating.

The pepperoni looks like little smiles on the roll.
I was tempted to add eyes!

We do have one little herb store that might have health food, but I've yet to visit... it's stuck in a little corner of town and we always forget about it unless we basically make a wrong turn (and kind of creepy looking).

There is also a small restaurant downtown that sells health food, but I'm not sure if you can buy groceries there. (Almost everything downtown closes at 6, so we hardly ever visit there either) Those are the only places I can think of that *might* sell health food, other than the tiny sections in the grocery stores.

Thanks! It was very easy to make, and fun. Even Justin easily made rolls, and he considers himself very craftily-challenged.

Your sushi makes me happy! They came out great! I haven't had a chance to put some odd items in mine although I have some ideas. A girl on the bentolunch comm mentioned putting sweet potato in them. Mmmmm.

You haven't been able to find miso packets? They are usualy in the Asian section. If you can't find any I can pick up some for you the next time I'm at the Asian market. But the ones you bought look nice and yummy. I'm not supposed to eat miso soup because it isn't completely vegetarian, but I try not to think about the fish stock in it.

The plates are lovely as well, did those come with your sushi set?

They have miso soup mixes, but I haven't seen any miso on its own. I do need to look a little harder to make sure, maybe in the health food sections.

The plates, mats, bowls, chopsticks and rests, and sauce dishes all came together in a little sushi plate set (Target), a set of 2. I don't remember if we bought them or they were a gift. The sushi making set came with a book, a rolling mat, a wooden spoon, and I think that is it. She also gave us the sushi rice with it.
