Pretty Paper Backgrounds
I have a few drawings sitting around that I've been unsure how to color, then I thought of using some lovely scrapbooking papers for the background. I picked up some paper, then printed out a few copies of the journal drawing I posted here earlier. I cut out the oval setction for the background paper. It was quite fun to be able to slide a new paper behind the drawing and change the whole feel of it. Here are two that I thought suited the drawing ~

I think it would be fun to use a different piece of paper for each one, but I'm not sure if the craft store has enough that would look good. I'm afraid that if I say it is one-of-a-kind, it will happen to be the one thing that sells really well, and I won't have enough papers to use. Though, I could always use fabrics too...

I am also not sure how to list these. They are half-print, half-original. If I mixed in a few more things, like rick-rack and buttons, then I would list it as a collage.

I also thought it might be neat to fill in every section of a drawing with colored paper, like I do with the fabric appliques. Each copy would have to be done by hand, because of copyright laws (would not be able to make copies of the paper), but I don't think that would be a problem. It seems like whenever I come up with one idea, I have to come up with 5 variations!

I may be getting some resin tonight ~ woohoo! And the mother ambigram is ready just in time. (Wait, I've said too much)

They both look lovely, but the first is my favorite. Filling all the spaces with different paper is time consuming, sorta like these I made: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=5627844

But it will definately turn out nice in the end. Too bad you can't make prints to sell.

Well, now I am worried that I can't sell any prints of the appliques that I've made. I hadn't thought about the fabric until I was writing about the paper. I only have the unicorn applique listed as a print, but was planning on adding more later. :(

I think, with all the practice I've had cutting out pieces of fabric for appliques, that I could piece the paper pretty quickly. I'm sure it would end up costing a little more than a print ~ it would probably take... 2.5 hours for a complex piece?

There has to be some way for you to find out what you can/can't do. It seems like the appliques are not about the individual fabrics, but your design, so it would seem ok. *shrug* I hope you figure it out because I know prints of your appliques will be popular.

I know ~ With the appliques, I feel like enough work was put in that it is really mine than someone elses, that's why I didn't even think about making copies.

But I am pretty sure that with most materials (like fabric or paper), that you can use whatever you buy, but you can't make copies of it. I can use magazine pages in a collage, but I can't make copies of the pages to use multiple times. So, I don't think you would be able to make copies of a collage either.

I do know that Mattel sued a man who was photographing Barbies (in naughty positions), saying they owned the copyright for the dolls. They lost the case, since he had bought the dolls, he could do what he wanted with them. So, I wonder, if he's allowed to sell photos, would I be allowed to sell prints?

I will try looking into it ~ but, they've re-done the copyright website so now it is very hard to find any information you're looking for :(

I am curious to know the answer when you find out.

Why are you looking at Barbies in naughty positions? :P

Silly girl! I just heard about it on the news.

By the way ~ I don't think I ever thanked you for sending the soy wrappers! You are so sweet ;) The sesame ones look delicious!

I was going to mail yours around the same time, and was waiting to email you about both, but then I had to wait for some payments. I'm sorry I didn't let you know they had arrived. Your suprise went out yesterday ;)

With everything that happened in the past week I totally forgot I even sent them! I'm glad you got them, and I hope you get to try them soon. Word or advice, they are harder to wrap than regular nori. I didn't have any break, although they seem fragile, they just have more stretch than nori.

Yay, I like surprises!

Well, I've looked through the copyright site, but their information is really more geared towards what you can copyright and how to register it. I asked on Etsy, but didn't get any information (not that I would totally trust it either way).

The more I think of it, the more I think it would be allowed. Almost all collages use images, fabrics, papers, ribbons, etc. that would be copyright, and I have seen many prints of collages. (When you create a collage, you do own the copyright, so wouldn't you have the right to make copies?) I would not be comfortable using a printed paper/fabric as a large background, but I think using little pieces of many things is ok.

I forgot to mention ~ I really like the first one too. I think the tiny print suits the picture better. The larger squares almost make it too busy. I wasn't sure if it would work at first, but now I know to hunt down the tiny prints, which are a little harder to find.
